The impact of dirt on wind turbine blades

Wind turbine blades are exposed to contaminants daily: from dust, oil, and industrial emissions to bird droppings and algae. This can affect aerodynamic performance, accelerate wear, and mask damage to the blade surface.

At Redak, we combine blade cleaning with inspection and maintenance to ensure optimal and safe performance of every turbine. Blade cleaning is especially important for:

  • Oil leaks – originating from hydraulic systems or the gearbox, spreading across the nacelle and blades

  • Industrial pollution – soot, chemical residues, or dust from nearby factories

  • Organic contamination – algae, bird droppings, and insect remains, especially in humid areas

How often should a wind turbine blade be cleaned?

The required frequency depends on the environment:

  • Windmills in production: according to customer requirements.
  • Blades after ship transport: Dirt such as soot and rust is cleaned on the ground before installation.
  • Incidents such as oil spills: Immediate cleaning is required to prevent environmental damage.

Cleaning methods

Redak uses various methods, tailored to the situation and level of contamination:

  • Rope access:The most commonly used method for tall turbines. Our specialists clean safely and accurately without additional equipment such as aerial work platforms.
  • Aerial work platforms or blade platforms:Ideal for lower turbines or locations where rope access is less suitable. Often combined with inspections or minor repairs.
  • Ground cleaning:For removing contamination from foundations, asphalt, or in the field. We also conduct a soil remediation survey to prevent environmental problems.

Cleaning agents and environmental care

We use cleaning agents that are effective without harming the surface, people, or the environment:

  • Biodegradable cleaners: safe and environmentally friendly

  • Solvents: targeted at oil and industrial deposits

  • Dry cleaning techniques: prevent the spread of oil into the environment
